Yea, but do I really need therapy?
This is a question I hear a lot. Many people have considered therapy but then thought ‘Is this really big enough of an issue for therapy?’ or ‘Do I really need therapy?’
Sometimes the struggles we have seem to be smaller than what others have going on or somehow ‘not worthy’ of seeking help. Of course, as a therapist, I’m biased. I think therapy is for everyone. Having an opportunity to bounce ideas off of someone and process your feelings on situations prior to bringing them to loved ones is so helpful. Therapy is a place to bring the crap you don’t even know what to do with and figure it out.
Coming to therapy doesn’t have to be based on some earth shattering experience. Some people come to talk about changing careers or adjusting to a new job. Some come for relationship help and to learn skills to communicate more effectively. Others show up to have that one hour each week where they have the space to process whatever is going on for them.
So while you may not ‘need or require’ therapy, it can absolutely be helpful. If you’re wondering if what you’re going through is worth seeking therapy, chances are, it is.
